Lesbi-honest trailer: Emma Stone as Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes
A quick note before we get to the trailer: I just turned in my last assignment before working on my dissertation! I hate not being as active on the blog this year, but I’m so excited to be nearly finished with my Masters.
Last month, the trailer for Battle of the Sexes starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell dropped. Normally, I could care less about anything to do with sports, but this one had me beating my chest with excitement. It chronicles the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. While it may have been a publicity stunt, it was a huge deal for female tennis players that King beat a man on the court.
I already love the rapport between Stone and Carell. It’s a classic “tortoise and the hare” tale. While Riggs is busy putting the “show” back in “chauvinism,” King is keeping her head down and focusing on the game. On one level, it’s delicious watching a woman who is not only good at her job, but loves it. On another, it’s exciting to see a big commercial movie centered on a lesbian character, and that not being her entire identity. Although it’s not the main storyline, there are hints at King’s secret relationship with a woman during her marriage.
Sarah from Lainey Gossip has called Battle of the Sexes “Emma Stone’s should-have-been Oscar.” I completely agree. But we all know the Academy has a boner for America’s sweethearts, as well as a tendency to give Oscars to the right people at the wrong time. In any case, this could be a vehicle for Steve Carell, who has been building a strong resumé for years.
