Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is like Eat, Pray, Love in Kabul
Which, correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t their intention. But unfortunately, that’s what you get in this surprisingly apolitical black comedy.
I saw this on opening day because I love movies about journalists. I especially love reading about female war correspondents, so this was right up my alley.
Tina Fey stars as Kim, a reporter who, fed up with her humdrum desk job, signs up to become a war journalist in Afghanistan. There, she clumsily learns the ropes of shadowing soldiers on the front line, all while befriending a spunky Australian reporter (Margot Robbie) and falling in love with a Scottish photojournalist (Martin Freeman).
“That is the most American White Lady story I’ve ever heard.”
Yes, one of the characters actually says that in the movie, and good on them for being self-aware, I guess. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that WTF is just another Eat, Pray, Love story that we didn’t ask for.
The movie’s also suspiciously free of any politics whatsoever (kind of like this one). I mean, I guess I understand since they’re toeing a fine line between dramedy and tragedy. Still, it seemed like an easy way out.
That said, Fey is amazing as Kim, in part because of her willingness to make herself look like an idiot. It’s just disappointing that her character being a war reporter wasn’t considered interesting enough without throwing in an unnecessary love story.
Also WHY THE F-CK IS ALFRED MOLINA PLAYING AN AFGHANI WARLORD? We’ve been over this.
