Why has it taken so long to get Carol made?
In an interview with Slate, screenwriter, Phyllis Nagy detailed the saga of adapting her friend, Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Price of Salt to the big screen. To be exact, it’s taken about 19 years (can you believe I still want to be a producer?). Long story short: Lesbians are cool, we’re just not sure about having two female leads. Nagy said, “That it was a lesbian love story was actually cool with [the investors]. It was around the time of movies like Bound, you know, ‘

Crimson Peak review
My grandpa and I went to see this the other day. It was Seniors Tuesday, you see. What I love about movie nights with my gramps is that right as the credits roll (which he insists on sitting through), he’ll give me his review. You know what he said this time? “If I were Guillermo del Toro, I would want to be kept anonymous on this movie.” To his credit, Del Toro creates a lavish gothic melodrama that’s gorgeous to look at. There’s a loving attention to detail on the sets, rig

American Ultra looks sick
You know what was on TV last night? Breaking Dawn Part 2. It’s only been a few years and already that movie isn’t aging well. I’m a Twilight fan and even I can’t justify why it has more CGI than a Pixar movie. (For a hilarious play-by-play of the books, read Zachary Little’s blog.) But I digress. American Ultra looks SICK. I can’t wait to see it when I get back to the States. It’s a dark comedy about a stoner (Jesse Eisenberg) who’s about to propose to his girlfriend (Kristen

Cinderella review
I just came back from watching Cinderella with my family. My last movie in the US before I fly back for my graduation ceremony. After three years of blogging, I am proud to say I’ll soon be semi-qualified to sit on the couch and type in my sweatpants. Cinderella is an interesting change from Disney’s previous fairy tale adaptations. Unlike dark retellings such as Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland, this one is unapologetically camp and true to the original 1950 cartoon. And m

Twilight wants more of your money
Because Lionsgate still isn’t done squeezing the udders of its favorite cash cow, it has launched a contest called The Storytellers: New Voices of the Twilight Saga project. It’s supposed to encourage new female filmmakers, so if you have boobs, you’re in luck! EW has just announced the six winners of the screenplay round. Isn’t this basically a fan fiction contest? Normally I’d be all over this, but since none of the stories revolve around Bedward, I don’t care. Here’s the l

"I love your mother's cookies" review
What I love about The Boy Next Door (aside from its porno name) is that it doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. It’s delightfully self-aware in its crappiness. J-Lo plays a recently divorced MILF who sleeps with the hottest and oldest-looking teenager in the world only to find out he’s a violent stalker. Noah’s biceps are the first thing we see of him when he sweeps in to fix J-Lo’s car. His muscles are even given their own montage as she gazes longingly out the window. H

Two more weeks
Have you guys seen The Weeknd’s music video for “Earned It”? Of course you have. Here it is just in case you haven’t (NSFW). So sexy. It reminds me of the Crazy Horse show in Paris. And the costumes are similar to Beyoncé’s rendition of “Naughty Boy” in On the Run. Anyway, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are on the cover of Glamour ahead of Fifty Shades of Grey’s opening on Valentine’s Day. Note that this is a month where movies go to die (see Jupiter Ascending). And yet the

Globes most twee
I can’t even blame her. This is the same woman who named her child Everly. So of course she brought the ruffles. In yellow. What’s even more disappointing is that Jenna Dewan is not incapable of dressing well. Last year everything was a slam dunk. From the gown right down to the nails. She still gets kudos for great hair. Which is an achievement compared to some of her peers, who can’t say no to hairspray. #channingtatum #jennadewan #redcarpet #dress #fashion #goldenglobes #a

The goth king and queen have split
As of writing, Hot Topic is mourning the separation of Tim Burton and his mistress of darkness, Helena Bonham Carter. This wasn’t actually surprising. They had been living apart for over a year. What’s interesting is the timing of the announcement. Why now? Burton’s film Big Eyes (starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz) opened on Christmas day, two days after Carter’s rep confirmed the split with PEOPLE. There hasn’t been a lot of hype around the film, so maybe this was a las

Not bad, not good, just nice
Before we get into this, let me start by saying I’M OFFICIALLY DONE WITH COLLEGE Y’ALL! I’m back in California for Christmas and so I’ve been too busy eating pie to update. I’ve finally had a chance to catch up on movies, so we’re back in business. Into the Woods was okay. To paraphrase the witch, it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t good, it was just nice. So what was good? The soundtrack was great. I was annoying my whole family by singing I WISH TO GO TO THE FESTIVAL all day. I am lis
